Caravan Tips and Advice

Caravan Weight Tips

  1. Weight ratio balance between your car and caravan is important, it is critical in ensuring the stability of your car and caravan.

  2. The National Caravan Council have determined that the best weight relationship for safe towing is that the actual laden weight of your caravan is 85% of your car's kerbweight. This is recommended especially if you are new to towing.

  3. If you load too much weight onto the noseweight of your caravan this will put additional strain onto the car or caravan chassis, which could lead to expensive repair bills!

  4. You can find out the weight of your car and caravan by checking the figures in your handbook, although these could vary a little (By about 5% either way)

  5. Overloading the back of your vehicle can also cause problems with safety. You may find yourself in a snaking situation which when the caravan takes control of the steering could make you unable to keep control of your car and caravan.

  6. There is also a small plate that is located on either the A-Frame or on the sill under the door of your caravan. This will tell you the gross weight and the payload, these are the amounts that your caravan has been designed to carry.

  7. Where you position the items inside your caravan when towing is also important for the stability of your caravan.
